Presentation in 분당 tomorrow
Tomorrow I have a presentation in 분당, at the Avalon head office. Here’s my PowerPoint presentation and here’s the class questions handout (for Ch. 2 of A.F.).
Creative Writing Exercise
This week at Avalon I asked my students to look at a page with four images on it and write a story using them. It was a lot of fun doing it
Here are the images! Here too is an example of a story that I wrote using one set of images and here’s a Growing Student Dictionary specifically for Korean students. I had fun making this and I’d like to use it later for a short story to publish.
Movie script website
I saw this great website today that has movie scripts. It’s good to read the script and then watch the movie
Guidelines on Brainstorming for Speaking
Yesterday I finished writing for my school an outline on how students can brainstorm for TOEFL iBT speaking questions.
Enjoy
Promotions to Intermediate
To my lovely morning class,
I had a conversation with my manager, Thorsten, and I’ve decided not to promote anyone from D1 to intermediate. This is because I don’t feel like any of you are ready for it. In our class there are two types of students:
1) Those great at grammar but not so good with speaking;
2) Those terrific at speaking but less able to use grammar correctly.
I want to see you guys using grammar correctly and speaking well at the same time. You know what your weaknesses are and I have given you lots of advice about how to fix them. You can’t move just because of grammar or speaking; you must have both. Trust me
I’m the best teacher at Ability, and if you follow my advice and help yourself then you will move faster, like Xiong.
Have a good Tuesday,
Haydn.
Promotions
Hi everyone, I hope you all have a good weekend. Just to revise, the only way that you will be promoted to Intermediate is if you:
1) achieve 85%+ on three consecutive grammar tests;
2) have speaking abilities equal to your grammar.
If you want to get promoted to the next level, remember that you must work hard
I show no favourtism- that means everyone needs to do the same thing. I don’t help some people more than others, and if you want to go to the next level you must show me how good you are. If you don’t work hard (and you don’t do your homework, miss class, arrive late, don’t listen to me, or don’t participate in class) then you definately won’t be moving up. If you want to move, you have to work hard for it.
This is true for everyone when they’re learning English and in life. Life and language learning aren’t easy, and it’s only you who can make yourself get better. Remember that it’s your learning, not mine. I’m not responsible for your learning- you are! So make the most of your time here and work as hard as you can. It will make life easier for you later
See you next week,
Haydn.
Welcome!
To the new students in my morning class – WELCOME!
It’s great to have you all with us. Our new students include:
See Won from South Korea, Zhi Yong from China, Satoshi from Japan, and Larissa Martins from Brazil.
I also want to say that you are always welcome to speak to me about any problem you have, even something personal. This might sound crazy, but I really care about you all so if you need to speak to me about anything, I am happy to listen to you :)
Also, if you want to me to check or edit anything that you’ve written (like CVs, emails, diaries, or letters) you can email me at haydnenglish@yahoo.com. Renato emailed me his resume today and everyone can do the same thing.
I’ll post another message on this site soon. VERY NICE!
Average Class Marks (Week 4)
Here are the average class marks of last week. You can see that our class has increased since last week. GOOD WORK!
I hope this week our class average increases AND that we do better than the Pre-Intermediate level. Very nice
Next Monday
Hi everybody!
Today ’s morning lessons were big today, with only six people coming! The good news for you is that next Monday’s test will mostly be on Chapter 5. The only question on Chapter 6 in the test will be question 10, which will ask you to write about the rich people. When you write your answers to question 10 I’ll be checking:
1) Your grammar;
2) Your usage of adjectives (the more you use the more marks you’ll get);
3) Structure.
Next week we’re going to do two different things:
- practise listening to a movie with no subtitles.
- practise reading articles.
I want to give you practise in listening, reading, and speaking this week. Grammar is interesting
but I think you need to practise all the other parts of language.
Anyhow, have a good weekend and stay out of trouble
VERY NICE!!!!!!
